Exoteric Interpretation of Genesis Chapter One

AN OPEN LETTER FROM JEFFREY BRACKEEN TO HIS SON JEROME

In our last issue, we touched briefly on the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac and the number of years that it should take a person to achieve total development and realize their true Self. Unfortunately very few of us ever attain to that perfection, due to our failure to learn control over the various aspects of our being, including the mental, emotional and

physical. We grow up with immature emotional fixations, false illusions, glamorous, deceits, prejudices, unhealed wounds and even hatred. We have all seen individuals who perhaps have developed great intellectual abilities but have neglected aspects of their personhood, resulting in unsoundness of body or spirit.

The Apostle Barnabus spoke of one of the abilities of a fully perfected person. He asks: "Who is there that is now able to have dominion over the wild beasts or fishes or fouls of the air. For you know that to rule is to have power, so that a man should be over what he rules

. . . He tells us when we shall have it, namely, when we shall become Perfect."1 Jesus was able to manifest this Perfection when he had the school of fish come to the fishermen’s nets.

Many people wish to view the first chapter of Genesis strictly in a literal sense, but it has a very rich esoteric meaning.

Maimonades, the learned Rabbi, wrote that should a person ever come to understand the real meaning of Genesis Chapter One, he must keep it to himself. In that chapter, we see God creating birds and fishes on the fifth day. Fishes live in water while birds are able

to fly in mid air. Esoterically, the fishes in the water represent our subconscious mind and our emotions which we must master before we can attain Perfection. The birds of the air represent conscious thought and intellectual achievements. Jesus demonstrated his

ability to control the winds and the waves, by commanding them to "be still".2 Cattle live on land and represent animal instincts and appetites, while ‘creeping things’ speak to us about earthly circumstances and events of life. Jesus taught that whoever "says to this Mountain, be cast into the sea and does not doubt in his

heart, but believes, that which has spoken will come to pass; he will have whatever he speaks."3 This agrees perfectly with the Book of Job, "You shall decree a thing and it shall be established to you."4 The Perfect Man attains the ability to ‘command’ the works of God’s hands.5

THE INITIATION OF ABRAM AND SARAI

In our last issue of the Seventh Trumpet, we began a discussion concerning the part Initiation plays in developing the full potential of a human being. Even in the Old Testament we find subtle references to Initiation. We read that Abram and Sarai, our blessed father and mother spent several years in the land of

Haran, where they learned much Wisdom from the men of that place.6 Haran was well known in ancient times as a place to learn heavenly or astrological Wisdom. For this reason, when the armies of Mohammed went forth conquering, they left these people alone and

called them Sabians. But it wasn’t until years later, in his life, that Abram and Sarai, each had an H added to their names - in essence giving them new names. (The name ‘Sarai’ means ‘contentious’ whereas Sarah means ‘princess’.) It was only then that God commanded

Abraham to "be Perfect".7 The Hebrew letter H is Heth and it was from the men of Heth that Abraham bought a field and cave to bury Sarah.8 Later on, we’ll return to the significance of the letter H, in other Old Testament passages.

THE PROGRESSIVE STEPS OF INITIATION

If we examine the teachings of Jesus, the Master and the Messiah, we will see a three-fold order of progress. In his Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in the Gospel of Barnabus, he encouraged the Apostles, whom he had just chosen to be Pure, then to be Holy, then to be Perfect. (supposedly, this is a quotation from Leviticus 20:7,8 but

obviously, Jesus was quoting from a text very different than ours.) He said to them, "Be ye Pure, for I am Pure; Be ye Holy, for I am Holy: Be ye Perfect, just as your Father who is in Heaven is Perfect."9 Our version of Matthew’s Gospel only quotes the last part of a sentence10 which does not exist in our text.

Those who would see these expressions as representing the same thing, err greatly. They represent three distinct stages of growth for the Pneumatic Man. The same three-fold distinction is found in Jesus’ parable about the seed: "But other seed fell upon the ground and brought

forth fruit; some a hundred-fold, some sixty-fold and some thirty-fold."11 As I have shown in various writings, the Early Christians recognized three separate Orders within their Churches, the highest of which was the Order of the ‘Perfect’.

There can be no doubt that our forefathers used a system of Initiation that involved a step by step process. By referring to passages from certain writers in the New Testament, we can see an order shining through at certain places. For instance, let's take a passage from the

writings of St. Peter, whose letters were originally placed before those belonging to the Apostle Paul, in the early manuscripts - at least until St. Jerome, the Roman scholar, changed the order and placed Paul’s writings before those of Peter, James, Barnabus, Jude and John.

In Peter’s second letter, he advises his readers to add to their Faith the following things: Virtue, Knowledge, Temperance, Gentleness, Endurance, Godliness, Brotherly Kindness and Love. 12 Yet, Faith was not the beginning of this process as we can see by taking a look at

Barnabus’ letter to the Hebrews, where he says: "We have many things to say, which are hard to be uttered, since you have become dull of hearing, for at this time, when you should be Teachers, you have need for someone to begin again teaching you the first Principles of the

Oracles of God. You have returned to [a level] where you need milk instead of meat. He who uses milk is unskilled in the Word of Righteousness for he is a mere babe. Strong meat must be reserved for those who are mature (literally ‘Perfect’), who through the exercise of their senses have developed the ability to discern both good and evil.

Therefore, advancing from the Principles of the Doctrines of Christ, let us move on to Perfection, not laying again the foundation of Repentance from dead works and Faith toward God, of the teaching about various Baptisms and the Laying on of Hands, or even [doctrines concerning] the Resurrection of the Dead and the everlasting Judgment."13 So it is obvious that a change of heart and mind towards God must precede Faith.

PURIFICATION, ENLIGHTENMENT AND PERFECTION

We can now turn our attention to the process of Purification, Enlightenment and Perfect. This process involves Nine Steps. First we will list them:

1. Repentance

2. Faith in God

3. Development of Virtue

4. Pursuit of Knowledge

5. Learning Gentleness

6. Endurance

7. Godliness (God-likeness)

8. Brotherly Kindness

9. Love, Perfection (Union with God)

It should not come as a surprise to us to see the Apostle Paul following this same progression in his letters, since he was taught by the Apostle Barnabus. Let’s take a look at what Paul wrote concerning the first of the ‘Principles of the doctrine of Christ’ - repentance.

REPENTANCE

"Now, the works of the flesh are manifest as follows: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, strife, jealousy, wrath, seditions, heresies, envy, murder, drunkenness, revelry and such the like, of which I tell you, as I have also told you in times past, that those who do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God."14

"This is the will of God, even your Purification, that you should abstain from fornication, so that every man may know how to possess his vessel in purity and honor, not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles, who know not God. That no man over-reach, defrauding his

brother in any matter. Because the Lord is the avenger of all, as we have warned you and do testify. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but to Holiness. He therefore, who despises his brother, despises not man but God, who has given unto us his Holy Spirit."15

"Therefore, kill your members which are upon earth; Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence and covetousness, which is idolatry: For because of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience, which you also walked in sometimes,

when you lived in them. But now you have put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech. Do not lie one to another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds and have put on the new man which is renewed through Knowledge ."16

FAITH

Concerning the second step, Faith, Barnabus wrote: "Now Faith is the Substance of things Hoped for, the Evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report; Through Faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which

were Invisible became Visible . . . without Faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he that comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He rewards those who diligently seek him."17

VIRTUE

Peter stipulated that the third step consisted of adding Virtue to Faith. And, Virtue must begin with our thoughts and words, as Paul shows: "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are Pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any Virtue and if there is any praise think on these things."18

KNOWLEDGE

Moving on to the fourth step, Knowledge, Paul writes: "I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of Wisdom and Revelation through the Knowledge of Him, the

eyes of your understanding being Enlightened, that you may know what is the Hope of his calling and the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us who believe, according to the working of his mighty power . . ."19

In the beginning, the acquisition of Knowledge entailed learning certain truths or doctrines, as some like to call them. These included basic teachings, such as Barnabus alluded to; "doctrines of Baptism and the Laying on of hands", then progressed to subjects like "the Resurrection of the Dead and Eternal judgment."20

The new Christian started his pursuit by seeking the Knowledge of the "first Principles of Christ" but as he grows older and more experienced, it was needful for him to progress to higher levels, as Paul wrote to the Colossians, "We also . . . desire that you might be filled with the Knowledge of his will in all Wisdom and Spiritual understanding . . . increasing in the Knowledge of God."21

The Apostle Paul was sad that he could not communicate this special Knowledge to the Corinthians. "Brethren I could not speak to you, as I would to the Pneumatic, but as to carnal or even babies in Christ. I have fed you with milk and not meat because you were not able to receive it and neither are you able now, because you

are carnal."22 "However, we do speak Wisdom among those that are Perfect; but not the wisdom of this world, nor that of the [Angelic] Princes of this world, which comes to nothing. We speak the Wisdom of God in a Mystery that is hidden, which God ordained before the world unto our glory."23

GENTLENESS

The fifth thing which the aspirant was to add was Gentleness. The Authorized Version has ‘temperance’ but the original language connotes ‘yieldedness’ or ‘gentleness’. Paul considered it to be one of the Nine Fruits of the Spirit; "The fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, Yieldedness, against which there is no law."24

Paul adds, "the servant of the Lord must not strive but be Gentle with all men, apt to teach, patient, instructing those who oppose themselves with Meekness, if peradventure God will give them repentance to acknowledge the truth."25 To which the Apostle James adds, "The

Wisdom which is from above is first Pure, then peaceable, Gentle and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits; without partiality and hypocrisy. For the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those that make peace."26

ENDURANCE

The next stage of development for the seeker is the acquisition of Endurance, concerning which, the Apostle James writes, "Count it all joy when you fall into various tests, knowing that the trying of your Faith produces Endurance."27

Paul encouraged his readers by saying, "And not just this, we also glory in tribulation, knowing that tribulation produces Endurance and endurance produces Experience and experience produces Hope, and hope makes us unashamed, because the Love of God is spread abroad in our hearts, by the Holy Spirit, which has been give to us."28

Finally, "We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us, for we are troubled on every side, but not distressed; we are perplexed but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down but not destroyed, always bearing about in our body, the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body."29

GODLINESS

Now, I must move on to some touchy subjects for some people, anyway. Many mistake piety for holiness and confuse holiness with godliness (or God-likeness). While these qualities may overlap, they are not necessarily one and the same. The word ‘holy’ literally means ‘set

apart’ or ‘separate’. Holiness requires certain conditions and limitations to make a person ‘separate’. The God of Israel spelled out exactly what it meant to be ‘holy’ in Leviticus, chapter 19. The ‘Holy Ones’ in Israel were those who kept the Law of God, thus separating themselves from

the nations around them. Our modern Fundamentalists are as likely as not to be anti-nomian, little realizing that without a set standard, there cannot be sanctification. Their fundamentalism may only be a kind of milk-toast piety. A ‘holy’ man in Israel could be married, indeed, the

Hebrew consonants for ‘holy’ and ‘marriage’ are identical. The distinction is made by adding vowels. A ‘holy’ man could participate in the Feasts of Israel and consume the flesh of animals or drink wine. A ‘holy’ man might even be rich and there were some who imagined that if a person were rich he was also ‘godly’.30

The scripture plainly states that "without Holiness, no man shall see God." When Job said, "In my flesh shall I see God", he was not necessarily referring to the time after the Resurrection. And I don’t believe that Jesus was necessarily referring to the Resurrection, when he

said, "The Pure in heart shall see God."31 This is an unsurpassable joy which has been granted to many a holy person even in this lifetime. But to be ‘godly’ is greater than being ‘holy’.

The early Christians earned the epitaph of being ‘peculiar’ for several reasons. They not only refused to attend the theatre where murder and adultery were glorified in song and mime, they were also known for refusing to eat meat that had been sacrificed in the markets and

dedicated to the gods (or demons) as the Christians like to call them. Diet distinguished many of the ancient Holy Ones from their neighbors. The historical records of the first two centuries of the Christian Era reveal that almost all advanced Christians were vegetarians. Why was this so?

THE THREE DIETS OF MANKIND

The Book of Genesis draws a distinction between three different diets which mankind has known. As long as man remained in the image of God, in the Garden of Eden, his food consisted of ‘every herb bearing seed and every tree in which the fruit of a tree yields seed to

you, it shall be for food."32 After his expulsion from the Garden, he was forced to till the ground, so that his diet consisted of grains and bread.33 Then, after the Flood, we see man eating the flesh of animals.34

The question arises, if God sanctified the eating of animal flesh, what does Paul mean when he says Israel lusted after "evil things"? "With many of them, God was not well-pleased; they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things served as an example to us, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they lusted."35

We read in the Old Testament, "The children of Israel said unto them (Moses & Aaron), we wish to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, while we sat by the flesh pots and did eat bread to the full . . ."36

Not long after, the mixed multitude among them fell to lusting and the children of Israel also again wept, saying, ‘Who shall give us flesh to eat?" . . . "And there went forth a wind from the LORD, which brought quails from the sea and let them fall by the camp . . . and they gathered

the quails . . . and while the flesh was between their teeth, even before it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague."37

Why would God give permission to mankind after the Flood to eat flesh, saying, "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you, just as the green herb . . ."38, now be angry with his people for lusting after the flesh-pots?

THE EVIL OF ANIMAL SACRIFICES

According to the Book of Jasher, it was the giants, those prodigious abominable, offspring engendered by the pairing of the ‘Elohim’ with the daughters of men, prior to the Flood,39 who set an example to the rest of mankind, by killing animals and eating their flesh, thus bringing the wrath of God upon mankind. Consuming animal flesh and sacrificing

cannot be separated, since the essence of the act of sacrificing was to offer a portion to God, as a thanksgiving offering. The Gospel of Thomas has Jesus saying, "I have come to do away with animal sacrifices and if you do not cease sacrificing, the wrath of God will not cease from you."40

The Essenes held that the Jewish Scriptures of their day had been totally corrupted but that the version which they used, contained the original writings of Moses and the Prophets. They insisted that when the Sixth Commandment forbade killing, it included both man and beast.

The great Prophet Isaiah affirms this teaching, by saying, "He who kills an ox is the same as he who slays a man; he who sacrifices a lamb is like him who cuts a dog’s neck . . . when I called none answered, when I spake, they did not hear but did evil before my eyes and chose that in which I have no delight."41 "Behold, joy and gladness,

slaying of oxen and killing sheep, eating their flesh and drinking wine; [saying] Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die. And it was revealed to me - in my ears - by the LORD of armies, ‘Surely this iniquity shall not be purge from you, till you die, says the LORD of armies."42

Elsewhere, we read, "Keep your foot when you go into the House of God; be more ready to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not consider that they do evil."43 We have been led to believe that Jesus drove the money-changers from the Temple, strictly because

they bought and sold in it’s precincts but he came to do away with animal sacrifices. He freed the animals that were to be slaughtered and drove them out of the Temple. David wrote, "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire. . . Burnt offering and sin offering you do not require."44

Some of our Fundamentalist friends just cannot wait for the Jews in Israel to rebuild their Temple and start offering up red-heifers again, little realizing that this would bring the wrath of the Most High upon our world.

Barnabus was right when he recorded that the people of the Old Testament thought that there could be no remission of sin without the shedding of blood.45 But God contended with them, asking, "When you come to appear before me who has required this of your hand - to tread

my courts: Bring no more vain oblations . . . When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you, even though you make many prayers, I will not listen, for your hands are full of bloods. Wash yourself, make yourself clean, put away the evil of your doings from

before my eyes; cease to do evil."46 The reason Jesus called John the Baptist the ‘greatest’ of all prophets was not because he came working miracles but because he "came preaching a baptism for the remission of sins."47

GREAT SAINTS WHO WERE VEGETARIANS

It was the kind of teaching found above that led the ‘spiritual’ men of the Old Testament to become vegetarians. Daniel and his three friends in Babylon would not eat the food of the king but contented themselves with a vegetarian diet. (The word translated ‘pulse’ in Daniel 1:4 & 16 in

the Aramaic literally means ‘grains and beans’.) We learn about Elijah’s diet from Jesus. When the men of Nain came to Jesus and complained about the famine that was killing their crops, Jesus encouraged them to fast and pray, saying, "Remember Elijah, God’s

servant, how that for three years he ate no bread because Ahab was seeking to kill him. During that time, he ate only herbs and wild fruit. Also David our father, ate bread only twice during the two years that Saul was looking for him to kill him; he also lived on herbs and wild fruits during those two years."48

Our version of Mark’s Gospel records of John the Baptist, that he "was clothed with camel’s hair and with a girdle of skin around his loins and he ate locusts and wild honey."49 There are several reasons to view this as a mistranslation. In the first place, had he eaten ‘locusts’ he

would have violated God’s laws concerning clean and unclean foods. The people of Israel were commanded never to eat any insect that crept and flew.50 Another reason to reject this translation is found in the Gospel of Hebrews (also known as the Gospel of the Twelve). This was

the Aramaic version used by the early Jewish Christians. It relates that the diet of John was "cakes made from oil and wild honey." The Greek word for ‘locust ‘is ‘akris’ while the Greek word for oil cake is ‘enkris’. It is easy to see how a mistranslation might have taken place. Honey was

the symbol for Wisdom. "My son eat honey, for it is good and know that Wisdom is such to your soul."51 In another place we learn that Jonathan’s eyes were "enlightened" by eating honey.52

Many of the Christian schools of higher Wisdom made extensive use of the Old Testament to show their advanced disciples that God had tenderly sought to lead the people of Israel into a vegetarian lifestyle. Concerning them it was said, "They refused to partake of flesh or wine, taking as their pattern, St. Peter, whose food was bread, olives and herbs."53

Eusebius, the Christian historian, quotes Hegesipus (160 A.D.) as saying that James the Lord’s brother, neither drank wine or ate the flesh of animals. And according to Clement of Alexandria, the Apostle Matthew "Lived on seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables, without the use of flesh."54

Chrysostom, that eloquent Greek preacher of the early Christian Era recorded of his fellow Christians, "No streams of blood are among them, no dainty cookery, no heaviness of head. Nor are there horrible smells of flesh-meats among them, or disagreeable fumes from the kitchen . . . With their repast of fruits and vegetables, even angels from Heaven, as they behold it are delighted and pleased."

Pliny, the Roman Governor of Bithynia, wrote a letter to Emperor Trajan, shortly after Peter had passed through there, referring to Christianity as a "superstition", saying that those who were being investigated abstained from eating animal flesh. "They admit the whole of

their guilt, or their error; they meet at dawn before it is light and address a form of prayer to Christ as to a divinity, binding themselves by a solemn oath never to commit any sin or evil . . . to partake of food that is ordinary and harmless."55 Seneca used almost the same words, in

referring to the Christian, "that foreign cultus or superstition, who abstained from the flesh of animals."56 Now, we must return to the things which were to be added to Faith.

BROTHERLY KINDNESS

"Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you along with all malice and be kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you."57 James adds, "What does it profit a man if he says he

has Faith but no works: Can Faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food and one of you say unto them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ not withstanding you do not give them things which are needful for the body, what does it profit? So then, if

faith does not have works, it is dead being alone."58 Now, we are ready to advance to the subject of Love.

LOVE - PERFECTION

Paul’s desire for the Corinthians, in his first letter to them, was that they would "be no more children."59 And even in his second letter, he grudges, "I speak to you as children."60 "This is our wish, even your Perfection." Even though the Order of the Perfect existed as a community within a community, there were grades and levels even within the Order.

For the person wishing to enter the Order of the Perfect, the first requirement was the necessity of forsaking all. "Whoever of you that does not forsake all that he has, he cannot be my disciple."61 To ‘forsake all’ entailed first of all, separating from one’s earthly family. He

must forsake his father and mother, brothers and sister, wife or husband, as Jesus taught, "If any man comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple." 62

The Christians in Corinth and Rome had written to Paul about this subject, inquiring whether all Christians were to become celibate. He wrote back, "Now concerning the things whereof you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman." . . . "I would that all men were

even as I am. But every man his his proper gift from God, one after this manner, another after that." . . . "I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried cares for the things that pertain to the Lord, how he may please the Lord; He that is married cares for the things that concern the world - how he may please his wife."63

Secondly, ‘forsaking all’ necessitated separating from one’s earthly possessions. When the rich young ruler came to Jesus inquiring about eternal life, Jesus recited the Law of God to him. The young man said, "All these things have I done since my youth." Jesus did not argue with

him and tell him that no one can keep the Law. No, Jesus loved him said to him, "If you will be Perfect, Go sell everything you own, give it to the Poor and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come and follow me."64

The reward for those who followed Jesus in the ‘Regeneration would be to sit upon twelve thrones judging the twelve Tribes of Israel. "And every one who has forsaken houses or brothers, or sisters, or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my Name’s sake, shall receive a hundred-fold and shall inherit everlasting life."65

Certainly this calling was not intended for all Christians, for we read in the Gospel of Barnabus, "Many were moved to repentance at the words of Jesus and would have left everything to follow him but he urged them to remain in their homes and to serve God with reverence."66

He knew that they were not ready to take that last Vow of Separation because they had not counted the cost of what it meant to be his disciple. Those who put their hand to the plow and then looked back would not be fit for the Kingdom of the Heavens. In the Book of Acts,

we read about those who sold their possessions and laid the money at the Apostles’ feet - how that two of them - a man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira, took the Vow of Separation but kept back part of the proceeds from the sale of their property. For lying to the Holy Spirit, they were struck dead. 67

Paul, well understood that those who sought to join the Order of the Perfect without having gained true love for God and their fellow men, would fail in this undertaking and he warned, "Though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have not Love, I am nothing, and

though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and thought i give my body to be burned and have not Love, it profits me nothing . . . and now abides Faith, Hope, Love, these three, but the greatest of these is Love."68

Only after attaining to this level, is the Initiate ready to be admittted the Higher Mysteries of "God and the Father and of his Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge."69 Here, we must conclude our study for the time being.
